Evolution of Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery – “The Miami Method”
I am constantly trying to improve my game, as we all should! Having said that, I am always looking at ways to simplify my method of accessing the valves and performing more complex procedures.
I have enclosed a picture of a mini MVR that I performed in 2004. Now, almost 10 years later, one can see that the incision has moved more lateral and superior. This has allowed me to have a more direct line vision of the mitral valve. I can truly say that I have a much more anatomic view of the valve despite it being further away. Hence, the ability to perform every single complex repair or replacement in the book.
Dr Lamelas,
Just found your website. I am a surgeon in the UK and share a lot of your beliefs in trying to spread the benefits of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Having done more than 150 mini mitral cases, I am just planning to start a right anterior program for aortic valves surgery. I was very impressed with your experience on redo aortic valve surgery through the the right mini thoracotomy. That has been one of my drivers in looking at this approach.
I have got a lot of ideas from your website. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this. I am sure many others will find this useful too. I shall look forward to subsequent posts and hope to meet up with you some time in the future.
All the best in spreading the word.
From a fellow believer
Joe
